Greater

Do you believe in coincidences? I don’t buy into karma or superstitions. I don’t think wearing the same socks game after game is the deciding factor on the scoreboard. A team wins the World Series as a result of hard work, taking advantage of the right pitches, playing good defense, and the occasional error from the other team. World Championships are not won as a result of the fanatic in section 214 who wears the same underwear to every game.

What goes around sometimes comes around, but treating others as you want to be treated does not mean you will always be treated the same in return. I think there are coincidences, but I also believe in the sovereignty of God. It might be a coincidence that you keep hearing or seeing the same thing over and over, but it could be that God is trying to tell you something.

My final two posts of 2012 included prayers and a theme song for 2013 that all point towards having a banner year and doing greater things in the Name of Jesus. If I am completely honest with myself, I have been struggling with seeing that happen. It’s not because this has not been a banner year so far and I have not done anything of great consequence, but the biggest place (at least in my mind) that I thought I would have a breakthrough in has not changed.

There are two ideas that I keep hearing repeatedly regarding following God’s calling and doing greater things for His Kingdom. One is to remain where you are, while the other is to do what Elisha did and have a barbecue and move on to the greater things. Either double down and change the world for God’s purpose or take a leap of faith and leave it all behind to do something bigger.

Right now, my family is in a stable place. My wife and I have steady jobs and we are chipping away at our student debt. We have good health insurance (despite the Affordable Care Act), and a home that meets our needs. God has not called me to leave the security we have in order to chase something out of my reach. He has called me to do greater things right where I am. My calling in this season is to set the stage for people to accept and grow in Christ and disciple others to do the same.

Brad Lomenick writes in his book, The Catalyst Leader:

Our generation, perhaps more than previous ones, experiences seasons of calling… I will probably experience five or six seasons of calling during my vocational life… Nearly 70 percent [of surveyed respondents] don’t view calling as a single, unchanging reality.

Some seasons last longer than others. The season I am in has lasted longer than I ever thought it would, but the leaves are not changing colors just yet. My gifts and passions have led me to ministry. This season of ministry is focused on church production and developing volunteers in that area. That doesn’t mean that I am not discipling people or preparing for my next season, but my primary focus is furthering God’s Kingdom with an awesome team through the technical arts involved in church production.
