Apple makes a great product.  They also utilize great marketing. Those two things combined gave me the desire to have an iPhone 4 when it came out.  I have been generally satisfied with the product but there are a couple quirks with my particular iPhone that have given me just cause to visit the Apple store in the mall on my way home today.

1.  Touch Screen is Touchy

It seems that 80% of the time that I have the iPhone charging in my car, the touch screen registers input from places on the screen where I am not touching.  For example, I might be trying to tap on a letter on the keyboard and the phone is registering me clicking on a link at the other end of the screen.  This problem is inconsistent and is easily fixed by unplugging the phone, but that is not an option if I am in desperate need of a charge.

2. I Don’t Want to Wake Up Early

But I still want to wake up… Over the past couple weeks, I have been having a tough time getting up in the morning.  I have a system where I set 4 alarms in my phone, the last one being the very latest I can get up and still be on time.  In doing this, my body has been trained to go back to sleep after the alarm goes off as long as it’s not that last time.  The problem is that lately my alarms have been going off an hour early.  I’ve tried resetting my phone and checking that there’s no weird time zone setting or something.  Without fail this week, my alarm has gone off an hour earlier than the time that it was set to go off.  I have a theory that this happened on the days that I slept in and I just don’t remember shutting the alarm of in the middle of the night.

With those two things in mind, here is an open letter to Apple:

Dear Mr Jobs and Apple Quality Control,

I really love the devices that you have designed over the years, and they seem to get better every year.  I’m not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems that you have some firmware/software flaws in the iPhone 4 that are diminishing the experience for me.  Since the “experience” with your products is what you focus on as your biggest selling point, I should hope that these issues are resolved soon.  On the chance that it’s just my iPhone that is acting up, I will be taking it to one of your stores today to be replaced.

Furthermore, I hope that the quality control from Apple bounces back from it’s decline in recent years (dust under the glass, the signal loss problem, and new MacBook Air issues among others).  I have been generally happy with my Apple Products (I still use my 15″ PowerBook G4 as my main computer), but I’d hate to see quality go down to get out a higher quantity.

Sincerely,

Tony
