I try not to spend a lot of (any) money on apps for my iPhone or my wife’s iPad. We do have a few paid apps, but with the plethora of free apps out there, there is almost no need to pay for any apps. One particular free app that I’ve gotten a lot of use out of is the You Version Bible app from LifeChurch.tv. This has been a great Bible for my iPhone because I can look up scripture in any version of the Bible I want.

The problem arises with the iPad.  While the Bible app allows you to download some versions for use when you don’t have WiFi (that’s right, I didn’t get her the 3G), some versions like NIV are unavailable to download. I’m guessing it has to do with copyright issues or something and it might eventually be available, but doesn’t help right now.

This week, I was blessed with an iTunes gift card, and my immediate thought was “What apps could I get for my wife that would make her iPad even more enjoyable and functional?” I remembered when a friend of mine was really excited about a certain Bible app that she bought when she got her iPad, so I texted her to find out that it is the Olive Tree BibleReader app.

This NIV Study Bible is amazing, and well worth the price. If you are looking for a Bible app that you can really study from, taking notes and making bookmarks, this is the app for you. I love that you can even highlight in different colors, making it feel more like the old leather-bound Bible that you’ve been using for years. The Olive Tree BibleReader app works a lot like Apple’s iBooks app in that you have a bookshelf for all of your versions and study guides. You can even download a ton of sermons from John Piper from within the app.

After experiencing this app, I would have definitely have bought it even if I didn’t receive that gift card. It’s well worth the money you’ll spend on it. Click here to go to the app store and buy it now.
