Gravatars

It's as easy as 1..2..3..

This week’s installment of #TechTuesday is about your online presence. Everyone and their moms seem to be on Facebook. I’d say the majority of people understand how to create a profile picture for themselves. What surprises me is the number of people I see commenting on blogs that do not have a picture setup to appear next to their comments. I know that they sometimes want to be anonymous, but I think it’s more that people don’t know how easy it is to set up a picture for this application. If you don’t want your face attached to ever comment you’ve made on every blog, you can use some other picture. A graphic or photo is an easy way to add some personality to your comments.

Is this you?

Almost every blog that adds an image next to comments (sometimes called an avatar) uses a service called Gravatar. Gravatars can be used for other things too, but it’s totally up to you. One of my biggest annoyances is scrolling through the comments on a blog and seeing a bunch of little anonymous grey guys or random line art next to peoples names. I’d much rather see a picture of them or something that represents them well. It’s simple, adds personality to your comments and best of all, it’s free. Just click on the link and follow the directions. You’ll be adding flare to your comments in no time and I’ll be less annoyed by the little grey men I see everywhere. 🙂
