Have you ever worked on a project over a long period of time? You tweak things here and there over the course of days, and those days turn into months and years. When you think you finally have it the way you want it, you realize that something you did messed up some other part. By the time you fix that, you want to take the whole project in a different direction.
That is how things have been on this blog. I started as “just another wordpress blog” and designed and redesigned my way to tlamarca.com 3.0. With so many little tweaks that I’ve made to Standard Theme to make it look the way I want it to, I can’t remember where they all are. This poses a problem when it comes time to make upgrades to the site and theme.
With that in mind, and some new ideas I have for the site, I have decided to start with a clean slate. Who knows, I might even rebrand the site with a new domain name and everything, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Later today, you will see tlamarca.com return to the stripped down, straight out-of-the-box version of Standard Theme. I am choosing to stick with WordPress and Standard Theme because I believe them to be the best blog platform and theme respectively, and many others agree.
3 Reasons To Not Expect Version 4 Very Soon
- Content first – Throughout every past design change to my blog, I have focussed all of my energy and attention on the design. This time around, I plan to only work on the new design if I have already written a blog post for that day.
- Attention to detail – As I work on the new design, I am going to work hard to make sure that every tweak is made where it is supposed to made. I also plan on documenting every customization, no matter how small, so that I can easily upgrade in the future without losing all of my hard work.
- Priorities – As much as I would like it to be, blogging is not my job. Blogging does not take the place of my family, friends, or career. I don’t even plan on making it my career right now. With that being said, designing my blog is pretty low on my priority list. I’ve had a problem with keeping it there in the past. This time around, there will not be any all-nighters. You will not find me on the couch working on the blog when I should be cleaning up the house or playing with my kids. I will not be spending my lunch breaks coding CSS and PHP files.
