Today is my first full day back at work after our family vacation to Michigan and I can describe the day  in 3 words… “I am exhausted.”  I had been feeling quite refreshed from the vacation but today I realized that in one week I forgot what it’s like to be at a 6 am accountability group followed by a work day filled with meetings, volunteer scheduling, production planning, upgrade research, PC troubleshooting, and general office duties.  I don’t know if I am still tired from the 7.5 hour drive that took 10 hours, or just tired from the early morning that started my day today.  What ever the cause, I need an energy boost.

It’s interesting how quickly our habits can change when we’ve had to work to get them to a certain point.  For example, I am not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination, but I work hard to get to the point of being wide awake for S.K.I.N. (my accountability group).  Today I had to work to keep my eyes open that early.  Habits that come naturally are easy to go (or fall) back to.  The habits that we have to work to develop tend to be more meaningful, but are also easier to fall out of.  I think the reason that those habits are more meaningful is because they are still a conscious decision rather than a subconscious act.  Sometimes a habit becomes a combination of conscious decision and subconscious act.  Praise and worship is one such habit for me.  I often find myself singing praises to God at seemingly random points throughout the day when things are going great, but I also have to make that conscious effort when things are going rough, and even more so when it’s just an average daily grind kind of day.

Making that conscious effort today is what birthed this post.  I was just going to write about how tired I am and mention some funny stories from vacation.  As I started writing about habits, I started praising, started to feel more awake and alive, and the few sentences I was going to write turned into the post you just read.

Do you have any of those habits that work both subconsciously and consciously?
What good habits have you developed that you still have to work on to keep up with?
